I have read and loved the author for many years. Never got to this one somehow until this year. I love the pace that he uses when telling his stories. I am not much for thriller type pacing or mysteries etc. The story is entertaining. As usual you can imagine it really happening.

It takes me back to a more simple time, notwithstanding the war. Definitely an old school tale set in the early days of WW2 in France. An interesting insight into the thinking of ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events and times. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. I enjoyed On the Beach, but it did feel dated. Not so, this one. Pied Piper is not only a timeless story, but it is beautifully, quietly written.

Shute took just enough time to let the story reveal itself naturally, but not at such a slow pace as to bore. I have had the opportunity to sit and record personal stories from WWII vets, and reading this felt very much like the best of those stories. It felt as though the old man was telling me what had happened. This is not an action book, but it's realistic and will leave you just a little bit tense in certain parts. In the end, be prepared to both feel happy at the outcome, but disappointed that the tale is over.

I was sorry to finally close the book. A beautifully written story. The only real violence in the story is that of the war and plays an important part in the plot; the real story is of an heroic old English gentleman and the role he was thrust into as WWII escalated and he was trying to leave France for England. One of my favorite stories by this author. I have read this book many times over the years and never tire of reading this wonderful story.

Love Nevil Shute's books he wss a great author. This story is worth reading i'm sure you will enjoy it too.

I loved the book then, and I love it now. The story is simply told, from the point of view of an elderly Englishman, whom we first meet in his London club during the Blitz. Too exhausted to move to a shelter, he begins to tell his tale to a stranger, who has also decided to sit out the raid, while the Luftwaffe's incendiary bombs fall closer and closer.

The old man's story unfolds slowly as tells of a fishing holiday in the Jura--the mountains that border France and Switzerland--in the early months of The story may, in fact, unfold a bit too slowly for some modern readers who have been exposed to the terse squibs that proliferate novels nowadays, but Nevil Shute is such a skillful storyteller that he draws the reader almost unawares into the narrative, rather in the manner of an expert angler reeling in his fish. Even though I know the story well, I could not put the book down until the very end. I was, after all these years, inextricably hooked.

This was pretty good, but not up to Shute standards. I did not care much for the endless description of the kids behavior at various junctures. The story was not really compelling to me. Trustee of the Toolroom and A town Like Alice exceptional must read. See all reviews.

Piper is well paced, has many stories within the story of bringing the children back to England - a man coping with old age, feelings of uselessness, the loss of a son; the formation of a deep friendship with the woman his son left behind, and so forth. Shute hits on the timeless themes of courage, fortitude, self-sacrifice, forgiveness etc.

There are no unnecessary speeches from men standing on a hilltop talking about "what it's all for".

“The Pied Piper of Hamelin”

As John Howard says, while in custody, to the German officer who tells him he must be a very brave man, "No, not a brave man. Just a very old one. Once with Monty Wooley playing Howard and then again for television - mid eighties, perhaps - with Peter O'Toole playing the role. Still, as the story is so marvelous, it should be done again for the big screen. Considering Anthony Hopkins's performance in "The Remains of the Day" which was superior to the entertaining but far less nuanced Hannibal Lecter , I think he would be perfect to play Howard, putting the perfect cap on his career.

I am a reader; I devour books. A Town Like Alice is one of my very favorites. I come back to it time and again, whenever I need to lose myself in the heat of Malaysia or the dust of Australia. This book is so well written that I can feel the stones in the road as Jean marches along with the other women in their "Death March". I can feel the despair she feels when she believes Joe to be dead and her intense joy when she discovers that he is still alive.

The story is timeless. My mother-in-law,who was a bride during World War II, first introduced me to this book saying that it was her all time favorite, and even though I came of age in the 70's, the book speaks to me as well. Its message of love's survival in the face of desperate odds gives us all a sense of hope. As radiation from a nuclear war that destroyed all life in the northern half of the earth gradually spreads southward to deliver its poison to all who live there, a number of Australians and a handful of Americans who reside among them attempt to continue some facet of normal life, even when the time for all things is nearly done.

We learn going into this foreboding novel that at most one year remains to even the most fortunate of those yet alive. We read along as the last of humankind pathetically or is it with dignity? What must it be like to dwell under these horrible circumstances? What must it do, for instance, to the mind of a devout theist when she sees the deity to whom she has maintained lifelong faith is not going to arrive deus ex machina to save her and make everything right again?

What must utter and complete moral hopelessness be like? How horrible must it be to be young and rise each morning knowing the despair that would come with so many hopes lying before you, now impossible to ever fulfill? And what must it be like to be a parent and understand that the children you bought into a terrible world reeling in extremis, will die in a matter of weeks?

On The Beach is not about exploding cities and geo-political confrontations. The war and the nations who fought it are distant, quiet memories, barely of significance. On The Beach is about people, and how those people carry on in the face of a doom they neither created nor can elude.

It is one of the darkest works of fiction ever produced, and also one of the finest. If it impacts a jaded modern reader so startlingly, what must it have been like to read this fifty years ago when the very concept of global extinction after nuclear conflict, was new? A universal, eternal classic of the Cold War era.
