Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I knew alchemists were crazy but I didn't know the half of it until after I finished the book. I like the fact that he went into detail as to why they thought the world worked as it did.
It very thoroughly explains it. Not only does this little volume do what it promises, namely help us to understand the connection between medieval subjective and religiously based alchemy and the "modern" objective science of chemistry, but the fact that it was written at the turn of the last century contributes to our appreciation of scientific progress which now marches on exponentially. Unfortunately, the figures which were a part of the original book are not available, and searching for specific words, numbers, or headings can be frustrating and often fruitless.
This book, which was a short page lesson, is fantastic for those who wanted a brief history lesson about a very mythical art. The author heroically defends the alchemist and thinkers well giving great tales and stories of their exploits. This book deserves five stars and is a good read for the inspiring chemists. The Story of Alchemy and the Beginnings of Chemistry
I like learning about all the old alchemical ideas. It is a pregnant example of the contrast between the scientific and the emotional methods of regarding nature; and it admirably illustrates suggestive, hypotheses, and baseless speculations. A concise history of Alchemy and its transition to chemistry written from the point of view of a scientist at the turn of the 20th century. It gets a bit condescending, but at the time the book was written chemists and physicists had a lot going for them, so its somewhat understandable. The original book was written just 4 years after the discovery of the electron, and the revisions were made just before the Bohr Model of the atom was theorized.

Very cool read and a must for any chemist, ph A concise history of Alchemy and its transition to chemistry written from the point of view of a scientist at the turn of the 20th century. Very cool read and a must for any chemist, physicist, and materials engineer! Had to repeat certain chapters as I found much of it very confusing, through no fault of the writer.

The alchemist's worldview and understanding of matter was all over the place. It felt like reading Dr. Faustus with all that talk about spirits and analogies that likened gold to a king taking his clothes off as he prepares for a swim chapter 5. Pleasurable reading into the minds of self proclaimed quacks who nevertheless unintentionally they thought it blasphemous to say that matter had no sp Had to repeat certain chapters as I found much of it very confusing, through no fault of the writer.
Pleasurable reading into the minds of self proclaimed quacks who nevertheless unintentionally they thought it blasphemous to say that matter had no spirit paved the road for the science of Chemistry as it is today. Back in the days I would have just read through this just so that I had started reading it and I do not want to abandon it. This is an okay book for an ardent fan of Chemistry, but not for someone simply looking for an enjoyable book for time pass.

Now-deprecated ideas helped get us where we are today, and there's a chain of connections between alchemists and early chemistry. This book was written when we knew a lot less than we do now about things like radiation and subatomic particles and it's nice to see that talked about as non-judgmentally as the alchemy while still making clear all the things alchemists were wrong about!
