I'm now through book 5 of the main series as well as the companion dark elf books, and so I want to provide some thoughts to someone who might be contemplating trying this series.
The 1st book in the series won't give you much hope about the future of the series, but let me tell you that overall it's worth diving into and my review above really speaks to my feelings about the published series as a whole, not just this book. Part of the joy of this series is watching the author slowly become a significantly better and more confident writer.
During the course of that growth the world, the characters, and my love for the series has also grown. I urge you give this series a chance and I hope by book 3 you'll have grown to love it as much I as do. Boring, predictable, mediocre fantasy novel. The first half is particularly bad.
The world begins to expand a little in this novel and the characters become a little more 3 dimensional. The world opens up, the main characters begin to have a real voice, and you feel the actual stakes at play within this universe. Most importantly the author finds how to incorporate his trademark snark and sarcasm into these relationships. The series asks questions that involve real more complexity including dealing with death, responsibility for our actions, and the importance of trust in relationships. Can't wait to see the path that this story finally takes us down.
This is basically Ender's Shadow to book 5's Enders Game.

One person found this helpful. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I absolutely love these books. This is the second series that I have been reading from this author. Since I got my Kindle and have close to 90 books on it Robert Crane is the author I keep following the series with. I love the Girl in the box and also the Sanctuary series. I find myself thinking about the books at miscellaneous times during the day and looking forward to my relaxing time to sit and read them. I also find it hard to put the books down and have found myself up way too late at night because I just can't put it down, the way its written keeps you always wanting to read to the next chapter.
I started this series when I had caught up with the Girl in the box series and I'm waiting for the next book to become available in Dec. I'm sure that I will be doing the same with this series. Again I love this series and author I recommend it to everyone!!! I read the first book after someone in a reading group recommended it, and I saw why they liked it, but the entire time I read it I felt like I was reading a MMO raiding groups biography instead of a story. It was well enough put together for me to give the second one a chance however, and I am glad I did, because it took the roots planted in the first book and grew out from there into a wonderful world.
Book three in the series takes it another step further and almost made me forget that I had thought this was an MMO group all together. The character development and world building is done very well, though sometimes I do feel like Cyrus acts more like a paladin than a warrior a lot of the time especially where it concerns his "love" of Vara. At times I find myself rooting for Aisling more and more as the book goes along I mean how long can a guy deal with cold then warm for a few seconds then cold again for years before he finds comfort elsewhere, probably the biggest fantasy aspect of the story sofar; , but we'll see what happens in the next book.
All the sudden you have to be careful not to let these assassins stab you or you will die for good, and that's not an idea that would be easy to wrap your mind around if you were someone who knew you could fight as hard as you wanted because you could be brought back afterwards as long as they got to your body in time. It seems odd to me that the fighting academy would not have taken this information into account when they were training their fighters, but still not enough of an issue to drop this story to four stars.
Mar 12, Jo rated it it was amazing. This book delivers on so many different levels. There is the usual snark of course. There is the kicking of butt that one normally sees in the Sienna Nealon books. But look beneath the surface - there is emotion, grief, loss and hope. Sometimes subtle, sometimes devastatingly raw, and sometimes, just honest.
Handled with skill as always , those of us who are rooting for more for Sienna might see the small seeds of that here. As well I suspect as the teases for the next big drama. I will This book delivers on so many different levels. I will say no more because spoilers.
But this is more than just Akiyama's story. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Mar 25, Blanaid rated it it was amazing. Time has arrived Another great read from Robert J Crane! A slightly older in years but considerably wiser Sienna returns in this tale that reintroduces Akiyama. We humans need the circle to complete, so great to find out the Akiyama backstory.
New villains, old friends, new storylines opened complete the circle RJC! Excellent book, unputdownable is that a real word? Apr 08, Hayley Parkes rated it it was amazing. The series is so much fun to read and it makes it impossible to put down the books. They are action packed and full of witty banter that makes you literally laugh out loud, reading it public gains you more than a few odd looks. Keep up the brilliant work! Mar 25, Robin Franks rated it it was amazing.
Awesome read This has been the most emotionally touching book about Sienna Nealon in the series. She is opening up and accepting help from her friends in a way she has not done before. This book made me cry in a few different places but it also made me laugh with some pure Sienna snark. Really looking forward to the next story in the series. I would recommend this story to any reader who enjoys witty repartee and some serious butt kicking action. Jun 12, Bardy Martin rated it it was amazing.
Another page turner I have really enjoyed this series and i am quietly suprised that i have not gotten bored.
Mr. Crane, If You Please

It has everything you expect from Robert and a new found love too! I'm glad to see this transition in our beloved characters while still seeing them be who they are at their core. This book has it all.. Thank you Robert for a fun and heart felt book. Can't wait to see where our Heros wind up next. Mar 13, Angie rated it it was amazing. Excellent addition to Sienna's story! Crane still manages to keep it fresh and exciting with every addition. If you can't tell my the name, the story finally tells us how the debt Shin'ichi Akiyama paid back was originally accrued.
More questions that have been niggling in the back of your mind have also been answered. Mar 14, Sarz rated it it was amazing. I never get tired of Sienna Another great 'Box' book from Robert. Apparently some people think this series has become stale, but I really don't agree with that. And I'm really happy to see the threads of a new storyline in this book, which means I'll be getting to read more Sienna in the future.

Worth the wait So glad Sienna get back to her bad ass self. Loving Harry and Kat story and the Augustus and Jamal storyline, string up some more super villains. Love Sienna having someone just for her and that she's letting herself let him in. Excellent book, highly recommend always will love these books, thank you Mr. Apr 18, J R rated it really liked it. Yet another great book from Robert J Crane. It was pretty interesting seeing Sienna's relationship with Harry develop while dealing with the ravages of time being caused by Akiyama. Bonus points for the plot twist with Kat, also.
Just when the readers think they know what's going on, they are proven completely wrong with the surprise trust at the end. Looking forward to the next! Mar 16, S Spurr rated it it was amazing. I just love these books. Mar 19, Alison Banks rated it it was amazing. Getting better Still need more of these books. Could read them over and over. Jamal and Augustus are pulled away from their work on a tip that could change everything in one easy minute.

But is it real? Apr 08, Miss Lisa Williams rated it it was amazing. And they are still amazing! Just when you think there can't be any more villains to stop, the world to save, Robert J. Crane finds more and he's not scraping the barrel either. Can't wait for this series to continue. Apr 14, melissa taylor rated it it was amazing. Loved it Can't wait for more,I always look forward to the next book being delivered to my kindle. The twist with Kat and Harry I totally did not expect but loved it. I hope Siena gets her souls back soon! Jul 04, oriole rated it really liked it. Still not as good as they were I feel the plots are getting lighter and the books seem shorter.
I did like the return of this character but was annoyed that the second story going on with the brothers wasnt as interesting and then had a lame ending. Mar 22, michael branch rated it it was amazing. Great job Mr Crane!!! Jun 05, Gemma rated it it was amazing.
