Loaded with detailed information about cruising design theory, building, and outfitting, it is even more essential reading than the original edition for anyone thinking about ocean cruising in a powerboat. Buehler's attractive, affordable, rugged, and ultra-economical powerboat designs are popular, and are cruising all the world's oceans.

A great read that may change your mind about a lot of things. George approaches the important questions from a slightly different angle. In doing this, he adds great value to the conversation in reminding us of many time tested approaches to a proper ocean going vessel that have been overlooked by companies trying to achieve market share and reduced cost. Go to Georges web site and be amazed at all the interesting articles and thoughts regarding a properly constructed ocean going boat.

A George Buehler no nonsense guide to troller yachts and related issues. If you are into boatbuilding and design this book is well worth reading as is his Backyard Boatbuilding book. You may well not agree with some things he says and you may not like his style or designs.

But if you have an eye for old fashioned common sense and are prepared to look outside the yachting trend magazines you will be most entertained. If you are more open minded, you may perhaps feel a challenge.

If you are a rebel at heart, well there is plenty to shock people with here And a lot to learn I trust you enjoy and learn. This is a good discussion about living on boats and one designers approach to it and the Diesel Duck designs he has come up with. So it is by definition a biased view but still one told with insight and a readable style.

If you like boats and the concept of cruising powerboat or just how such thing all hang together it is a good read. George Buehler's latest edition is a good update on boats that make sense for serious cruising and long distance voyaging. While focused on his own well proven, practical designs that have evolved nicely with the input from experienced users and builders, there is plenty of valuable commentary on other designs. While only a minor distraction to the good content, the editing is terrible.

Common sense and simplicity are rare commodities these days. George reminds us with eloquence and humor of how things used to be, and perhaps should be again. Unlike those fuel guzzling seagoing bulldozers called Trawler Yachts, his new designs were based on the graceful salmon trollers of the Pacific Northwest, among the most fuel efficient, seaworthy, and beautiful powerboats ever built.

This wasn't particularly original because some west coast naval architects had designed boats based on troller types long before Buehler was even born. But Buehler took the idea and gave it a hull form that was inexpensive to build, fuel tankage for transcontinental range, and an interior specifically planned out for a couple to be comfortable full time living aboard as well as long term cruising.

Finally, he added a simple sailplan that greatly stabilizes roll, helps fuel economy, and will get you to shore if the engine quits. Built of steel in California, powered by a small four cylinder diesel, and just 38 feet long, small for what many people thought an ocean going powerboat should be, she rapidly proved to be seakindly and comfortable to live in. But she did something else that nobody had expected.

Wherever she went her rugged, simple, and traditional good looks stood out amidst all the white molded production boats, and soon Buehler was being asked to design more boats of this type. People wanted different lengths, different interiors, and even wood versions, so Buehler started designing variations on the Troller Yacht theme. People started building these new boats, and some of them added wonderful new ideas to the concept.

Buehler happily incorporated many of them.
