Qui pius prudens (Stoltzer, Thomas)
His success as reformer was rather limited, as we know, for instance, from his intervention in Gaesdonck, a monastery in the Low-Rhine region founded in After his inspection travel he returned to Saint Agnietenberg and was appointed subprior of the monastery Gnadenthal near Kleve. The reform he intended to realise there failed and as a consequence he ordered the dissolution of this monastery. In Paris, the Windesheim reform failed totally, in Chateau-Landon and Cysoing it was accepted with some hesitations, in Livry however enthusiastically.
In his correspondence with Erasmus of Rotterdam, containing four letters, Mombaer reported about his attempts to realize the reforms, an attempt which was praised by Erasmus. The reform activities were not limited to the Windesheim foundation. On the 9 th of April Jan Mombaer was appointed abbot of Livry. Due to the difficult circumstances under which Mombaer had to work, he got ill soon and died on the 29 th December Mombaer loved literary work, books and libraries ardently. His unpublished correspondence contains valuable information about libraries in the monasteries of Windesheim, including those in Northern France.
In this work Mombaer shows an elaborated sensitivity for the practicability and variety of individual meditation forms.

As Ulrike Hascher-Berger show in her studies, the work is one of the most important sources for the understanding of the role of music in the new devotional practices. Even more, the Rosetum shows the experimental efforts of the Devotio Moderna to search for an encyclopaedic approach, using different media, of the spiritual quest. The method of the scala meditatoria was in line with the upcoming religious individualisation of that time.
The handpsalter has been appreciated and promoted intensively by Wessel Gansfort. Mombaer was the last important representative of the Late Middle Ages.
He had not the intention to develop an original or innovative doctrine, he just wanted to mediate the spiritual heritage of the Devotio Moderna and to transfer it to later generations. So, he became the father of the methodical meditation as practiced in Early Modernity. Luther also quoted Mombaer in his Psalm Lectures of It is well known that his rich and comprehensive book had a large influence on e.

It is most probable that Cisneros got personally involved with Jan Mombaer in Chateau-Landon, through Standonck who was active in Paris. It is for sure that Ignatius of Loyola , during his pilgrimage to Montserrat in , learned to know the prayer method of abbot Garcia de Cisneros. Nevertheless and for the same reason, it was also through Ignatius that the influence of Mombaer reached into the Modern era until today. As such, the work of Mombaer may be one of the main keys to the relation between Ignatian spirituality and the Devotio Moderna. Although this relation often is considered to be important, very few research has been doneto make it explicit or to elucidate its precise meaning.
